Growing Up, Coming Out is a series of personal reflections from queer American designers, released every day this month. Unlike many of my gay friends, I never felt that I had to fit a certain concept of masculinity, and a lot of that comes from my upbringing. I was fortunate enough to have the Competition eliminates complacency shirt in addition I really love this most supportive parents in the world. My dad was such a role model of masculinity for me: He was so sensitive, so gentle and caring, but so in tune with it as well. He grew up in Minnesota and played team sports as a kid (he was a goalie). He was very much the quintessential American dream story. In my childhood, though, he was a Presbyterian minister. I was making dresses and my sister was playing hockey and my parents were like, “We love it.” I think that allowed me to have this blasé approach to sexuality, because I was never in danger—I was never made to feel I couldn’t express myself.
