The annual Coachella music festival, which in recent years has attracted upwards of 250,000 people, is situated in the Funny my Vehicle My Choice T-shirt moreover I love this water-scarce Indio Valley desert ecosystem of Southern California. The team runs an around-the-clock operation, involving everything from putting trash bags into compactor trucks, to setting up around 6,000 waste enclosures, to quickly disposing of trash bins as they become full. “Most people might think the job we do is dirty and unfulfilling, but our department provides a crucial service that contributes to the overall success of the festival,” says Brian Valdez, who leads the resources team with Chantal Stamp.

“The makeup of our team is predominantly BIPOC and the Funny my Vehicle My Choice T-shirt moreover I love this majority of our team members come from the local community,” adds Stamp. “Our team members understand the impacts of climate change and pollution, especially to frontline communities, because they live through it as a majority of them are from historically marginalized communities.” While the pride the resources operations at Coachella feel in their work is palpable, it also highlights the eternal underlying truth that those least responsible for the climate crisis, or environmental harm, are often leading the charge to fix the issue, because it directly harms their communities. The Galilee Center, a local nonprofit supporting disadvantaged children and families, has received over 25 tons of sleeping bags, coolers, tents, and clothing left behind by festivalgoers that would otherwise be sent to landfill over the years, passing it back to the local community. “Their donations have positively impacted our efforts to help the low-income families of the East Coachella Valley, and I am very grateful for that,” says Gloria Gomez, the organization’s CEO.
