Then she masterfully dyed and sewed the synthetic hair into a variety of super textural and avant-garde garments, often employing advanced hand-stitching techniques. There’s Bob Mackie-esque cocktail dresses, men’s trousers, and even an office-ready blazer (for the adventurous). Here, Akhuetie shares a tantalizing first look at her inaugural “hair collection” and speaks on her burgeoning dreams as a “hair artist.” Some may ask: Why employ straight, fake hair as an ode to Black hair traditions? Akhuetie argues that synthetic hair—fake strands made from artificial materials, like acrylic or nylon—plays an oversized role in modern Black hairstyles. “It’s the same hair you use when you do weaves or wigs,” she explains. Think of the colorful wigs of Nicki Minaj or Cardi B, or all the talk of “snatching wigs” and “lace fronts” on Love and Hip Hop and Real Housewives of Atlanta. Seminal works like the Chris Rock-directed documentary Good Hair and Tracee Ellis Ross’ new docuseries Hair Tales have tackled the complicated relationship many Black women have to “eurocentric” synthetic materials.
