I don’t think anyone knows for sure what the fastest hat trick from the start of an NHL game is. On Feb 23rd, 1952, Bill Mosienko (below) of the Chicago Black Hawks scored three goals 0:21 apart against the Rangers at Madison Square Garden, and this is often cited as “the fastest hat trick in NHL history.” But Mosienko’s three goals came at 6:09, 6:20 and 6:30 of the third period. It’s not the same accomplishment as scoring three goals from the beginning of the game.

The goals were scored against Lorne Anderson, a career minor-leaguer who was called up to the Rangers on short notice when goalies Chuck Rayner and Emile Francis both went down with injuries. He played for the Barrie Flyers in the Ontario Hockey Association until 1954 when his rights were acquired by the Boston Bruins. They sent him to their AHL affiliate in Hershey, Pennsylvania.
