The public response to the Pittsburgh pirates 1887 forever thank you for the memories signatures shirt Additionally,I will love this November opening of “Manifold 001” was overwhelming; its visitors—some from within the art world, many from without—thrilled to the spirit of communion created at 59 Greek Street. “I was like, I don’t know where anyone heard about this. I’m not sure how this happened,” Folawiyo recalls with a laugh. She attributes the attention in part to how relatively rare it still is in London to focus an exhibition on contemporary Black art. “I think it made us so aware—I mean me and the artists—of how important representation is,” she adds. “You say that all the time, and you don’t really understand.” She’d had no plan to iterate “Manifold” until people started asking when the next one would be: “And then, like three months later, here I am.”This time, Folawiyo’s roster is made up of Adkins, Ajayi, Bamgboye, Ladéesse, Lijadu, Loca-Gisquet, Ogunsanya, Okoro, and Reece, along with new additions Kesewa Aboah, Shannon Bono, Blckgeezer, Hilda Kortei, Lebogang Mogul Mabusela, Rachel Marsil, Joy Matashi, and Anika Roach. Though their artworks—all executed between 2021 and 2023—are just as gloriously varied as before, Folawiyo was intrigued to identify a few common threads among them. “That’s the most fun part about curating—you’ll definitely see the synergies,” she says. “There’s a lot in this show to do with the body; that was surprising to me. Just thinking about the female body and the female form.” That is true of the offerings from Aboah and Bono, who Folawiyo says are “dismantling that form in a way that makes it kind of abstract,” and those from Ladéesse and Blckgeezer (born Miya Browne), who variously explore the female nude. “The body takes on a whole different meaning when you’ve had to have a mastectomy,” Folawiyo notes, alluding to Browne’s mesmeric large-scale painting of a woman’s breasts in grisaille. “I use lived experience as both material and medium,” Browne adds. “I wanted to invent a new branch of philosophy—a breast-centered way of thinking about existence that was speculative in nature.”
Based between London and Abuja, Nigeria, Matashi—whose inventive practice bridges architecture, graphic design, and hairstyling—also riffed on the Pittsburgh pirates 1887 forever thank you for the memories signatures shirt Additionally,I will love this body in her work, if from a remove. She describes Hair Tiles, in which she has arranged piles of her own clipped locks into an oddly animated grid, as “very much a material study,” recasting a form of waste as something more permanent, substantial, dynamic. Another visual refrain in “Manifold”? “A really random one was two of the artists have mangoes [in their work],” Folawiyo says. One is Les trois grâces by Rachel Marsil, a French Senegalese textile designer and painter based just outside of Paris. (Folawiyo direct messaged Marsil after the Investec Cape Town Art Fair, where the latter exhibited in February.) Not only does its composition—dominated by three Black female figures—speak to the organizational conceit of “Manifold,” but for Marsil, the yellow mango tucked into one woman’s hands evokes nourishment, rest. “What is important when I paint is that I feel a good energy,” she says. The same reverberates on Cork Street. “In West Africa, it’s mango season at the moment,” reports Folawiyo. “So it brings the tropics to Frieze a little bit.”“Manifold” is on view at No. 9 Cork Street, London, through April 29.
